A Guide to Choosing and Caring for your Pet Rabbit! Pet rabbits can be quite readily kept in cages in the home, with some freedom to run free in the house after thoroughly rabbit-proofing the rooms the rabbit will roam in. Step 1. Bigger is better. If your bunny will spend most of its time in a cage, then get the biggest cage that is practical in the home. As a general rule, the cage should be at least 4 times the size of the rabbit. Step 2. Bedding and Liners. Grass mats are a good idea for solid floored cages, too, to provide traction. Fleece blankets can also be provided. Pieces of carpet or towels also make nice mats, as long as your rabbit is not unraveling and eating them. Step 3. Litter Boxes should be checked daily and changed if needed. Rabbits usually take well to litter training, although some flexibility may be required by the owner. Rabbits naturally pick one or more toilet areas, and owners can take advantage of this. Step 4. Remove any uneaten fresh foods (greens, veggies etc.) from the cage daily. Step 5. Wash out the food bowl(s), and wash and refill the water bottle. Step 6, It is a good idea to periodically disinfect your cage, but any disinfectant needs to be rinsed really well. |
